When is Guru Nanak Jayanti in 2026?

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Purab, falls on the full moon of Kartik. In 2026 most calendars list it on Tuesday 24 November.

Because it falls on a weekday, many gurdwaras in Australia and New Zealand hold the main diwan, langar and Nagar Kirtan on the weekend before or after. Dates can differ between calendars, so check with your local gurdwara.

  • Bandi Chhor Divas: Sunday 8 November 2026, on the same day as Diwali. See our Diwali 2026 TV guide.
  • Guru Nanak Jayanti: Tuesday 24 November 2026.

How Sikh families mark Gurpurab in Australia & NZ

Gurpurab celebrations here look a lot like back home, just spread across more suburbs and weekends:

  • Akhand Path: a continuous reading of Guru Granth Sahib Ji over about 48 hours, ending on or near the day.
  • Prabhat Pheris: early-morning hymn singing in the days before.
  • Nagar Kirtan: processions with kirtan, held in several cities.
  • Langar: the free community kitchen, open to everyone.
  • Diwan and kirtan: special programs at the gurdwara, often running late into the evening.

Large Punjabi communities in suburbs such as Tarneit, Craigieburn, Truganina, Blacktown, Quakers Hill and Auckland keep their local gurdwaras busy all month.

Gurbani and Punjabi TV at home

Not everyone can get to the gurdwara, especially elders, new parents or anyone working shifts. Live Gurbani kirtan on the TV at home lets the whole family share the day.

Infinity TV includes live Punjabi TV with Gurbani kirtan, Punjabi music, news, movies and dramas, plus 7-day catch-up, so a morning program can be watched again in the evening.

See a short video of the Punjabi and Gurbani channels on the box.

Ready before the family arrives

Gurpurab often brings relatives over for the weekend, and sometimes parents visiting from Punjab for the season. A few simple steps:

  1. Take a free 24-hour trial on WhatsApp a week or two ahead to check the Punjabi channels.
  2. Set up the box on the main TV. It takes a few minutes; see the setup guide.
  3. Show elders the Punjabi menu so they can find Gurbani on their own. Our guide for parents has a simple note card idea.

Infinity TV is AUD $380 for the box and 24 months of service, then AUD $180 for each 12-month renewal. It's posted to your door anywhere in Australia and New Zealand.
